Glenda
Have you ever met a car show model? I have. Glenda was 6 foot tall, she was all legs and very thin. Glenda was one of a few black women I called my friend. We worked together for five years. Glenda eventually left to work for the big three automotive. Which is a big deal if you live in Michigan. Great jobs, career growth, excellent benefits and pensions, or at least there used to be.
But Glenda was also an amazing woman, she did not have children and did not want children. She was engaged to a man at the time I knew her, and I eventually did attend her wedding. I remember it was a June Saturday when the Red Wings were in the Stanley Cup. They actually wheeled a flatscreen in the reception hall for everyone to watch.
I think I found Glenda amazing because she had convictions. She planned on getting married but nor for long. She was adamant that she would only be married for seven years. Then she planned on moving on. I guess amazing may not be the best word to describe a woman of conviction. Especially since her conviction seemed a bit strange or heartless. Maybe the right word for Glenda was fascinating.
Glenda would invite my husband and me to her house. We never ended up going. She stayed in touch and actually was a guest at my niece’s wedding. I think of Glenda from time to time when I see a very tall women. They are quite rare you know.
But I also think of Glenda when I have a bold decision to make. One that may seem unpopular to others. Glenda gave me courage to think beyond my peers and what is expected. If you take anything from Glenda or this post, let it be independent thought. Don’t worry about peer pressure or what other people will think. Do what you believe is right for you. It takes all kinds to make the world go round. You are the person who has to live with your choices and the judgment you may receive for those choices. Live your life as you choose, just be comfortable that you can live with your decisions.
