Cheryl

If I had to choose a word to describe Cheryl it would be perky. She was tiny, 4’11’’. Long blond hair, blue tinier eyes and a beautiful smile. She seemed to always be smiling. I worked with Cheryl for four years. I admired her life. She was married but never had children so she had this air of freedom. She could do what she wanted, when she wanted.
She had money to buy nice clothes, travel and engage in whatever hobby she chose. She was a skier and she belonged to a book club. She is like that person you watch on TV every week. You watch to see what they get to do next. Meanwhile, you are at home with the kids, just trying to pay the bills and keep your head above water.
Cheryl seemed to have the perfect life. But what I didn’t know at the time was Cheryl wanted to have children, she just couldn’t. Her and her husband had tried for years. Eventually they divorced. I left that place of employment when Cheryl was going thru her divorce. I have no knowledge of what happened to her or where she is now.
I still think of her smile and her perkiness from time to time. I guess no matter what people display to the world, it may not be very real. Even if you appreciate it, it might not be genuine. Very much like a tv character, Cheryl may just have been acting. She was such a sweetheart. I can not imagine a man leaving a woman just because she can not give him children. I find that profoundly sad.
God Bless Cheryl wherever she is. Who knows? As science improved, maybe she was able to have children. After all, that was over thirty years ago. I hope that Cheryl’s brief story encourages you. Keep in your prayers all those who struggle to experience parenthood. The one thing a lot of those who are fertile, take for granted and sometimes even regret.
