Honoring My Great Aunt Rose: A WWII WAC and Family Icon

Rosie to my Dad, Aunt Rose to me. She was actually my Great Aunt Rose. My mother’s aunt and a pleasure to have known.  She was not without her quirks, but she was a great contributor to life and history. Rose served as a WAC in WWII.  She also looked a lot like Judy Garland. She had a beautiful figure and a gracious smile. Her rosy cheeks matched her name. She wore the perfect 40’s hairstyle fantastically in all of her pictures.

She was a mother to one son, and she loved her wine.  What I remember most about Aunt Rose was her svelte figure. She was always dressed in the finest of wool dresses and sporting a fur coat. I believe I have one of her fur coats in a Halloween bin of dress up clothes somewhere.  Aunt Rose was sophisticated, smart and the proper lady, always attending church on Sunday.

She was a different type of Mother, some said over controlling. Her son turned out to be a successful corporate attorney, so she did something right.

My Dad loved to mess with Rosie, he even named his second beagle Rosie just to rile her up.  He was always playing practical jokes on her whenever he could.  She loved every minute of the attention my Dad showered over her.  I was always proud to call her my Aunt. I know few women who would have stepped up. Voluntarily joining the Army back in the 40’s was rare for women. She did just that.  She beamed with pride in all of those pictures in her military uniform.

Aunt Rose or Rosie has been in Heaven for sometime now. I am sure she is dancing a polka up there with her husband. I imagine she is also dancing with my dad, like she did many times here on earth.

The world needs more people like Rosie.
