Lai
Raising above diversity. Lai did it everyday. Lai was 4’ 5” she was disabled, a victim of polio. That did not stop this mighty little woman. She had black silky hair she wore in a bowl cut and very thick glasses. Lai’s family owned a Chinese Restaurant, she worked there when she wasn’t working for me. She operated one of our check processing machines. She worked full time and was never late, never absent and never complained.
Lai had a special place in my heart. To see someone with so many personal challenges rise above and work two careers, was quite remarkable. She never married and would never had children. She lived with her circumstances and spent her days smiling and participating fully in life.
My family and I would frequent her family restaurant so my children could visit with Lai. She had a quality that was quite the force. Lai was very much a superhero in my eyes.
Meeting a mighty soul is a pleasure. This person was dealt a terrible hand in life. Yet somehow, they smile through it all. I hope it will help you embrace all the good you have in your life. Everyone has struggles from time to time. They include career, children, relationships, and circumstances beyond our control. However, some individuals, like Lai, face real struggles every moment of every day.
